THE PRISON DESERT IN THE SECOND MILLENIUM

THE PRISON DESERT IN THE SECOND MILLENIUM

Yes, there has already been an October 2013 appeal.  This is another.  The bank account is, today, $01.38.  Need stamps, gasoline, books, and prayers in the worst way.  God bless you for all you have done!

Reading again in the literature of the Desert Fathers, I am struck powerfully by the enormity of the exodus from “civilization.”  At one time in the fourth century, as many as ten thousand hermits lived in the deserts. Many were fleeing the law, the courts, Arian bishops, and the tax man.  From the end of the apostolic age until the advent of St. Benedict in the late 5th century, Christianity was mainly carried by the desert fathers.  They carried it pure, apostolic, and orthodox, often leaving their cells to defend it against heresy {oops, politically incorrect word!]

Now we are entering a post-civilized age, and once again (I think) the Christian Ark will be borne through the deserts, in the deserts of vast cities, which now comprise over 50% of the world’s population, and in the few areas that will not be dominated by either Islam or the post-Christian modernism that denies or perverts the most fundamental truths of human existence.

Some of the new desert fathers are in prison cells, and like the desert fathers of old, they survive on a bare minimum of human comforts.  Desert Prison Ministry’s monies are split about equally between books for the soul and money orders for corporal needs.  For example, in October, $120 went to money orders for prisoners.  Most of this is spent on shoes, socks, stamps, underwear, toiletries, instant coffee, and an occasional snack.

Some of the donors to DPM do not like to give money to my nefarious plots to convert men to Catholicism and the Rule of St. Benedict, but are quite happy to donate to physical needs.  Be assured, dear friends, that donations you specify for such needs will not be spent on catechisms or Catholic classics!
Blessings on all our donors and thanks!  The American prison system  continues to grow in size (largest in the world for the size of the country) and insanity.  Please pray daily for us in Tennessee where the Attorney General is again scheduling prisoners for execution.

Benedicite!  Ken Craven

Desert Prison Ministry is a private, unofficial, unestablished, unincorporated, unrecognized Catholic prison ministry conducted by Dr. Ken Craven, poustinik.

My purpose is providing succor, counseling, friendship, and support to prisoners in any prison via mail and personal visits, mentoring, and group meetings.

I am a Benedictine Oblate and am currently mentoring two groups at Riverbend Maximum Security Prison in Nashville, TN, under the guidance of Chaplain Jeannie Alexander and Father Donald Raila, O.S.B., Oblate Director, St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, PA.

The purpose of this blog is to solicit support: prayers, stamps, money orders, and the contribution of books that can be sent to prisoners.  Books may be Bibles, prayerbooks, classic literature, or prison literature.

I will list the needs I have on this site.  If you are willing to assist me with a specific need, please contact me at:
